DUP MLA Jim Wells has insisted he should not have had to resign as health minister over controversial comments he made about same sex parents.

Mr Wells stood down as minister after he appeared to link same-sex relationships with child abuse at a hustings event in Downpatrick on April 23.

But in an interview with the Down Recorder he said he should not have had to resign for "something I did not say".

He blamed people at the hustings event who videoed his comments and posted edited versions online. Mr Wells said the videos did not show his later comments, which clarified his position.

The newspaper said that a transcript showed Mr Wells had actually claimed that any children from unstable families "gay or straight" were likely to be abused.

"I accept that what I initially said was clumsy but the publication of the full transcript shows it was not the awful thing people had thought I said," he said.

"That has left me with a huge sense of injustice, that I have been forced out of my job because of something I never said. My career collapsed for something I did not do."

Mr Wells was questioned by police last week over his comments.

He apologised for the "offence" caused but within 48 hours further complaints were by made by a lesbian couple who claimed Mr Wells had insulted their lifestyle choices while he canvassed for their vote in Rathfriland.

The remarks led to a public outcry and within days Mr Wells resigned from his long-coveted health portfolio.
