SINN Fein has taken part in a British Legion commemoration in Dublin for Irishmen killed in World War I.

Stormont speaker Mitchel McLaughlin, Belfast lord mayor Arder Carson and Dublin lord mayor Críona Ní Dhálaigh attended the ceremony at the national war memorial at Islandbridge.

British armed forces veterans were joined by Irish UN soldiers and the Republic's arts and heritage minister Heather Humphreys at the event on Saturday.

The British Legion warmly welcomed the presence for the first time of Sinn Fein representatives, who laid wreaths for the dead.

Party chairman Declan Kearney said it was "another important contribution in helping develop a greater appreciation of our shared and yet divided history".

"For too long remembrance has contributed to existing divisions. There is a need for an agreed culture of remembrance and commemoration, which is based upon mutual respect and equality."

Meanwhile, President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Enda Kenny led the annual National Day of Commemoration ceremony at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin yesterday.

Similar events across the Republic commemorated Irish dead from past conflicts including the two world wars.
