A WOMAN seriously injured while watching the North-West 200 in May has paid tribute to a doctor involved in treating her who was himself killed at a practice race at the weekend.

Emergency trauma doctor Dr John Hinds from Tandragee, Co Armagh, died after being involved in a “serious accident” at the Skerries 100 race in Dublin on Friday night.

Dr Hinds, known affectionately as 'Doc John', was part of the Motorcycle Union of Ireland’s medical response team at races.

The 35 year-old worked as an intensive care consultant and anaesthetist at Craigavon Area Hospital.

Violet McAfee suffered serious leg and head injuries when she was struck in the three bike accident at the North-West 200 while standing in a friend’s front garden on Station Road in Portrush in May.

She received treatment from a medical team, including Dr Hinds, at the scene.

Paying tribute to him on social media, Ms McAfee said the Armagh man’s death was a "tragic loss."

She said: "Unfortunately I never had the privilage to meet him the day my accident happened on NW200, again he was there to help me a spectator and the riders."

Ms McAfee added: "He obviously loved his job and my heart goes out to his family and his partner, God bless and keep you."
