CONVICTED child killer Barry McCarney was yesterday charged with wounding a man while in jail.

The 35-year-old, who is currently serving a minimum of 25 years behind bars for the murder of 15-month-old toddler Millie Martin, was not at Lisburn

Magistrates' Court yesterday where he was charged with wounding a man called Dennis Lancaster on June 6 last year.

It was not clear if his alleged victim is a fellow inmate or prison warder.

McCarney, is originally from Trillick, Co Tyrone, but his address was given as c/o Maghaberry Prison.

He was due to have his case sent to the Crown Court for trial but the preliminary enquiry was adjourned until later this month at which stage he will appear in court.

McCarney is serving a life sentence for the murder, sexual assault and grievous bodily harm of Millie Martin, who died in December 2009 after being admitted to hospital in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, with serious injuries.

It followed weeks of abuse that culminated in a fatal attack at her mother's house in Glebe Park, Enniskillen.

McCarney had started a relationship with Millie's mother, Rachael, and moved into the family home in Enniskillen months before her death.

During the ten week trial the court heard that in addition to the fatal blow to the back of her head, Millie had suffered a multitude of other injuries, including internal injuries which could have proved just as fatal.

These injuries to her abdomen had been caused by punching or prodding not only in the weeks, but possibly even in the hours before her death.

McCarney had always protested his innocence, claiming he was sickened and saddened by Millie's death, but last May his appeal against the convictions

were dismissed by the Court of Appeal.
