Police have revisited the scene of an IRA bomb attempt on a car belonging to a serving police officer.

Officers mounted checkpoints around Eglington early this morning, Thursday and spoke to local people about the car bomb attempt a fortnight ago.

Army technical officers defused a viable bomb after it was discovered under the intended victim's car which was parked outside the home he shared with his fellow police officer wife at Glenrandel near Eglinton.

Five men, from Lurgan, Dublin and Eglinton, were arrested in the days after the attempted bombing but all were released without charge. A group calling itself the IRA later claimed responsibility for the attack.

This morning's operation was designed to obtain more information about the attempted attack, according to the officer leading the investigation, Gareth Talbot.

Detective Chief Inspector Talbot said: "It is surprising just how many people were out and about in the early hours of 18 June in Eglinton. We want to make sure we have spoken to each and every one of them to ensure every possible piece of information has been fed into our investigation.

"This was an attempt to kill a police officer and his family. It also posed a risk to other residents and caused considerable disruption and upset to the local community."

DCI Talbot said the response from the community in Eglinton so far had been positive. Police also handed out a leaflet with detailed appeal points during this morning's operation.
