Shadowy loyalist group issues threats to Parade Commission members

HARDLINE loyalists have threatened to attack members of the Parades Commission in the run up to the Twelfth.

Members of the commission have been warned by police of an imminent attack on either their person or their homes.

It is believed that dissident loyalists issued threats to individual members of the commission in recent days.

One member living in the North Down area has already been warned that they are under threat while others have been told to increase their personal security in the coming weeks.

The address of one member was passed to police. It is thought that person has since left their home.

In a statement the group said they will target "every member (of the Parades Commission) at regular intervals.

"If we cannot walk in our areas then they will not be able to live safely in them.

"We are based in Antrim / Mid Ulster and have the support of loyalists across the province."

The threat comes as unionists have expressed anger at recent Parades Commission determinations placing further restrictions on marches in Belfast.

Last Friday's Tour of the North passed off peacefully with bands observing the single drum beat determination while passing St Patrick's Church in Donegall Street, Belfast.

The area has been the scene of violence in the past.

Restrictions have also been placed on Orangemen ahead of this Saturday's annual Whiterock parade, with loyalist residents told they must hold their protest on the Shankill Road side of the Workman Avenue security gate.

A PSNI spokesman said: "We do not comment on the personal security of individuals. However where we believe that someone needs to review their security we take steps to inform them immediately. We never ignore anything that would put someone at risk."
