Second Lurgan arrest linked to Eglinton bomb

A SECOND man from Lurgan in Co Armagh has been arrested in connection with a car bomb attempt on a service PSNI officer.

The 57-year-old was arrested in the Lurgan area yesterday morning. PSNI detective chief inspector, Gareth Talbot said the man was being questioned about a booby trap bomb placed under a police officer’s car outside his home at Eglinton early last Thursday morning.

He was taken to Antrim Police Station for questioning.

A dissident group calling themselves the IRA claimed responsibility for the attempted attack on the home of the policeman and his fellow PSNI officer wife.

Householders in the Glenrandel area in Eglinton were evacuated early last Thursday after a viable device was found under the officer’s car.

A short time later three men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested in Co Donegal in connection with the attack. The men, one from Lurgan and two from Dublin, were arrested by a specialist Garda support unit and later released pending further reports.

A fourth man, from the Eglinton area, was also arrested and later released last Thursday.

It was reported that the intended victim’s police officer wife was alerted when she got up to investigate a noise outside the couple’s home. It is believed the device, which contained Semtex, was similar to the bomb used to kill Catholic police officer, Ronan Kerr in 2011.
