PRIMARY school leavers got a send off to remember yesterday when they were treated to a surprise theatrical display on their last day.

Some 35 parents and teachers took part in the "flash mob" event at St Ita's Primary school in south Belfast to say farewell to the P7 class ahead of their transition to secondary school.

Principal Joanne Browne joined teachers and parents to surprise pupils by taking over the playground to preform the hit Bruno Mars song "Uptown Funk" - complete with the dance moves - yesterday afternoon.

Mrs Browne said a parent contacted her to suggest doing something novel to give the pupils a memorable send off.

Members of the flash mob had been rehearsing in secret for weeks to keep the performance a surprise.

Organiser Ciara Rogers said:"To the best of my knowledge this is the first parent and teacher flash mob in Northern Ireland.

"The end of primary school is a time of mixed emotions and we thought we would give both ourselves and the children something to smile about. "

Pupil Niamh Loughran said she was very surprised but proud to see her mum up dancing.

She said: "It was very good.

"We didn't know what was going on when we saw them and I was like 'why are you here?' Then we saw them dancing."
