THE adventures of three time travellers are to feature in a TV programme centred around the 1916 Easter Rising that is set to receive state funding.

Aptly entitled, Wrecking the Rising, the programme follows the mayhem caused by three accidental interdimensional travellers who find themselves hurtling back in time.

The hapless trio in the planned TG4 project quickly discover that their presence in Dublin threatens to change the course of history during one of the most decisive periods in Ireland’s turbulent past.

As preparations continue to commemorate the centenary of the Rising, programme makers are keen to find new ways to depict the historic events.

The Republic-based Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has earmarked three television programmes centred around the rebellion among 24 TV projects and 99 radio projects set to share in just over E5.1 million funding as part of its Sound & Vision Scheme.

Other TV projects set to benefit from funding include Generation on RTÉ 1, which will be a five-part series focussed on the three weeks around the Rising. Programme-makers hope to put the events into a global context.

And TV3 is working on Trial of the Century which will explore what would have ensued if the Provisional Government leaders had actually been put on trial rather than summarily executed by British forces after a hasty court martial.

BAI chief executive Michael O’Keeffe said the body was “particularly pleased” to fund projects associated with the Rising and set to appear on TV screens during the 2016 commemorations.
