ULSTER Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt has criticised a Stormont department for delays in releasing information on safety concerns over plans to redevelop Casement Park.

The MLA hit out after the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure (Dcal) said it would delay responding to his freedom of information request, submitted a month ago, by another four weeks.

It comes amid a probe into the west Belfast GAA stadium project after safety expert Paul Scott said he faced "undue pressure" to approve the plans.

Last week Sinn Fin culture minister Carl N Chuiln's former permanent secretary Peter May admitted he was aware of emergency exiting concerns since late 2013.

But he told a Stormont committee the concerns were not raised by Sport NI as a "show-stopper" issue.

In a statement on Friday Ms N Chuiln said she was "unaware of the safety concerns at Casement Park, to the extent raised by the Sport NI official [Mr Scott], until his evidence to the CAL (Culture Arts and Leisure) committee".

Mr Nesbitt criticised the delay in his request for details of any paper trail between the minister and her officials.

"The minister has since refined her original position of total ignorance over safety to say she wasn't aware of how serious the concerns were," he said.

"In admitting she had some knowledge, she has jumped on a slippery slope."

Planning approval was overturned in the High Court in December after a judge ruled it was unlawful. The GAA is to submit another planning application.
