Man on child porn offences first to be brought to court by NCA

An alleged child porn offender has become the first person brought to court in Northern Ireland by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Morris Johnston (45) appeared before magistrates in Belfast accused of having indecent images of children.

He is the first person to be charged since the UK law-enforcement body became operational in Northern Ireland.

The NCA's powers were extended last month to help the fight against crime.

Its remit includes targeting serious and organised criminals, and combating the threat of child exploitation.

Johnston, of Innis Walk in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, is only charged with counts of making and possessing indecent images.

The alleged offences occurred on dates between September 2014 and May this year.

Johnston was remanded into custody unless he can find an address approved by police.

He is due to appear back at Belfast Magistrates' Court on July 3.

A spokesman for the NCA later confirmed the charges against him were the first brought by the agency in Northern Ireland since its powers were extended.
