Teenagers treated after 'taking prescription drugs'

Four young teenagers are recovering in hospital after they took unknown substances.

The four boys, aged 14 and 15, were found in a semi-conscious state in Derry’s Galliagh area on Wednesday evening.

Derry independent councillor, Dermot Quigley said the mother of one of the boys was told they would have died had they not been found.

Three of the teenagers were in a stable condition in Altnagelvin Hospital while the condition of the other was not made public.

The Derry councillor said the boys were found by a friend after they had taken the substances, understood to be prescription drugs. Mr Quigley, an active anti-drugs campaigner in Derry, urged young people not to take drugs which were not prescribed for them.

Police have confirmed they are investigating.

A spokesman said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances and to identify the nature of the substances”.
