Former health minister Jim Wells has been appointed to two Stormont scrutiny committees following the DUP reshuffle prompted by his resignation.

The South Down MLA stepped down from the Executive after making controversial comments about same-sex relationships at a hustings event in Downpatrick last month.

Mr Wells was replaced by former finance minister Simon Hamilton as part of a series of changes which saw Arlene Foster take the finance portfolio and Jonathan Bell appointed Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment.

Following Mr Wells' remarks linking gay relationships with child abuse, DUP leader Peter Robinson said he had been under "incredible pressure" due to a recent illness suffered by his wife and knew immediately he had said the "wrong thing".

However, fresh video footage from 2011 obtained by the Irish News has cast doubt on the claim that the comments were a one-off.

Footage from a discussion with students at South Eastern Regional College shows the former health minister telling a class of teenagers that homosexual acts are "sinful" and gay relationships are "equally wrong".

He also appeared to suggest that children raised by gay couples are more likely to end up "delinquent, attacking police or in crime".

In yesterday's series of DUP appointments, Mr Wells joined the assembly's finance and personnel committee and the public accounts committee, replacing Peter Weir and Alex Easton respectively.

A DUP spokesman said there was a significant difference between the workload of a health minister and a member of a Stormont committee.

In the other appointments, Gary Middleton replaced Peter Weir on the environment committee; Sammy Douglas replaced Mr Middleton on the social development committee; Paul Givan replaced Sammy Douglas on procedures committee; and Tom Buchanan replaced Mr Douglas on the committee on standards and privileges. Paula Bradley will take Mr Weir's place on the Assembly Commission.
