A commemoration service was held in Newry yesterday to remember the forgotten victims of the Famine.

Up to 30 people gathered at the Paupers graveyard in the city to attend the cross-community service.

The Newry and Mourne Commemoration of the Great Famine comes ahead of the national service of rememberance later this year.

It will be the first time that the annual famine commemoration will be held in the north.

The service will take place in Newry on September 26 - marking the 250th anniversary of the start of the 'Great Hunger' first began.

In recognition of the fact that the Famine affected all parts of the island, the location of the annual commemoration has rotated in sequence between the four provinces since it began in Dublin in 2008.

At the time of the announcement in April, the Republic's minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys welcomed Newry's "strong application, the enthusiasm shown by the local community for the project and their determination to mark the occasion in a fitting, respectful and inclusive manner".
