Bomb warnings at homes of leading Sinn Fein figures

Two leading members of Sinn Féin have received bomb warnings at their homes in Derry.

MEP, Martin Anderson and assembly member, Raymond McCartney received warnings that bombs had been left at their homes. Threats were also made against the party's offices in the city.

The threats follow a paint bomb attack on the home of deputy first minister, Martin McGuinness and an arson attack on a car belonging to well-known Sinn Féin activist, Sean McMonagle.

Ms Anderson said she received four threats about bombs being left at her Bogside home, adding that the threats were particularly sickening as it was widely known that her 90-year-old mother Betty, who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease, lived with her.

The Sinn Féin MEP said three warnings were phoned through to the Samaritans and a third was received at a Sinn Féin office. She said her mother, who is unable to walk or talk, was wakened in the middle of the night as a search of the house was carried out.

Assembly member, Raymond McCartney said the threats would not deter the party from its work.

"This comes after threats against my party colleagues Mickey Brady and Conor Murphy in Newry and Armagh and the cowardly attack on the home of Martin McGuinness here in Derry.

"Clearly the people behind this are intent on intimidating our party activists and disrupting the services were provide to all the public."
