Two men lost their lives in separate accidents on the Republic’s roads during the bank holiday weekend.

A 33-year-old man was critically injured when he was struck by a car while walking on the Cork side of Castlemartyr on the N25 at around 5.15am yesterday morning

The victim was rushed to Cork University Hospital but later passed away. The driver of the car was unhurt. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses.

In a separate incident, father-of-three Aidan Lynam, who was in his 40s, died from injuries suffered when his motorcycle was in collision with a car while he was taking part in a motorcycle fundraiser for Down Syndrome Ireland on the Kilrush Road in Co Clare shortly before midday on Sunday.

Mr Lynam, who was one of the event’s organisers, was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the car was uninjured.

Prior to the weekend the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and gardaí had appealed for drivers to watch out for motorcyclists on the roads, pointing out that five motorcyclists had died in crashes since January compared to two during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, hundreds of bikers are expected to travel to Clones in Co Monaghan on Friday for the 13th annual Gone But Not Forgotten Bikers Memorial event.

Up to 1,500 bikers attended the 2014 event which is organised as a memorial to all those who have died in a motorbike collision.
