A MAN has had part of his ear bitten off at a fast food restaurant in Belfast city centre.

The attack happened at McDonald's at Donegall Place at about 10pm on Thursday.

Police said a group of men were involved in an altercation during which a man in his twenties had a part of an ear bitten off.

A 24-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and last night remained in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Reid appealed for anyone who witnesses to contact police in Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101.

Meanwhile, on the same evening police came under attack from gangs of youths throwing masonry in north Belfast.

Police said two opposing groups of youths had gathered in the Somerdale Park and Ingledale Park area for what was thought to be a pre-arranged fight.

Masonry from a garden wall pulled down in Somerdale Park was thrown at officers who attended the scene.

A boy aged 16 and an 18-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour.

The 16-year-old was later released on police bail pending further enquiries while the 18-year-old last night remained in custody.

Superintendent Bobby Singleton said: "I would appeal again to parents to make sure they know where their children are and what they are doing and to talk to them about the danger of getting caught up in the moment and the possible outcomes they could face if they are found committing any offence."
