School pupils have dedicated a remembrance garden to two nuns killed in a car crash.

Sr Frances Forde and Sr Marie Duddy died when their vehicle collided with the unmarked police car on the A1 carriageway close to Newry in September last year.

The Belfast-based nuns, part of the Sisters of Mercy order based at Ballysillan House on Crumlin Road, had been making their way to a religious retreat at Dromantine when the crash happened.

Yesterday, Sr Frances' brother, Fr Peter Forde con-celebrated a special Mass at Mercy PS with Fr Gareth Thomas from Holy Cross. Later, they opened a garden of remembrance at the rear of the nuns former home.

Sr Frances was the former principal of Mercy PS and following her retirement from teaching she continued to work for the Holy Cross parish. Sr Marie taught in Our Lady of Mercy College Ballysillan, as well as in Africa and Queen's University Belfast School of Education.

Pupils and teachers of the primary school were joined yesterday by many Sisters of Mercy as well as pupils and staff of Mercy College.
