'Jail gay people' comments get global coverage

THE controversial views of a Co Tyrone election candidate who has called for gay people to be jailed have gone global.

Spanish language La República, based in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo, published an article about Susan-Anne White, pictured, headlined "Northern Ireland candidate proposes criminalizing homosexuality".

The story generated many Face-book comments from readers in the South American country, where same-sex marriage, abortion and cannabis are all legal.

Quoting several of Mrs White's election pledges, such as her opposition to feminism, belief in capital punishment and call to ban Gay Pride parades, the publication noted that the independent is unlikely to be elected MP in West Tyrone after May 7.

"Luckily, although she is firm in her beliefs, she is clear she will not win the election," it said.

Uruguayans took to social media to express their reaction, with some congratulating the Trillick woman.

One wrote: "Totally agree with Mrs White. Thanks for her bravery in this age of cowards and a corrupt world."

However, another man said he was concerned that "we are in the 21st century and there are still people who think like this".

Another contributor said: "Why is this woman speaking in public? Does she not have underwear to wash or dishes to do?"

The article focused on Mrs White's manifesto rather than on her support for the DUP's Jim Wells, who she claimed was "in the main correct" in comments linking same-sex couples with child abuse.

Mr Wells has since resigned as health minister.

Mrs White, who gained 67 votes in last May's elections to Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, also told The Irish News this week that studies show gay people are more likely to abuse children.

Child protections experts have rejected any suggestion that children of same-sex couples are more likely to suffer abuse or neglect.

Mrs White was jeered when outlining her views to an audience during a hustings even in Omagh this week.
