Fans get World Cup fever at premiere

SOCCER fans had a rare chance to get close to the World Cup last night after it was displayed in Belfast at the premiere of new film Shooting for Socrates.

Fifa allowed the trophy to be displayed at the Waterfront Hall for the gala premiere of the film, which focuses on the story of two Northern Ireland soccer fans, set against the exploits of the 1986 Northern Ireland World Cup team.

Co-written by Belfast playwright and actress Marie Jones and director James Erskine, Shooting for Socrates stars John Hannah as Northern Ireland manager Billy Bingham as well as other prominent actors, including Richard Dormer, Ciaran McMenamin and Conleth Hill, who plays BBC sports presenter Jackie Fullerton.
