AN SDLP councillor who was subjected to abuse online after commenting on the Mid Ulster super council's flag policy has been warned by police she is under threat from loyalist paramilitaries.

Denise Mullen, the daughter of one of the SDLP's founding members Denis Mullen, was warned by police this week that she is under threat.

The warning came as Ms Mullen, whose father was murdered by the UVF in September 1975, welcomed the decision not to fly any flag above the council's building.

The Dungannon councillor said she was "distraught" at the news and "extremely disappointed" at a Facebook page which contains threats against her.

The page has since been reported to the police. "This is not the first time I have been targeted," she said.

"My family knows too well the pain that can be inflicted by those who seek to intimidate or commit violence to further their political objectives.

"We have not cowed down before and we will not cow down now."

The Dungannon councillor said she was "disappointed" that some unionists had either 'liked' or commented on the Facebook page currently under police investigation.
