Handball coach 'critical' following 3-vehicle crash

A YOUNG handball coach from Co Tyrone remained in a critical condition in hospital last night after sustaining severe injuries in a three-vehicle crash over Easter. Conor Coyle (21), from Pomeroy, was said to have sustained a broken leg and arm as well as internal injuries in the collision outside Augher.

Five others were taken to hospital following the crash, which happened on Saturday at about 9pm on Annaghilla Road.

Mr Coyle's girlfriend, who was a passenger in his Volkswagen, was taken to the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen where her condition was said to be "comfortable".

His car was thought to have crashed head-on with a vehicle carrying a family.

The mother and father and two children, a six-year-old boy and girl aged 11, sustained injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

Mr Coyle has been involved in playing and coaching handball at Pomeroy Plunketts GAA club.

Pomeroy councillor Cáthal Mallaghan, whose election agent was Mr Coyle's father Declan, said the family are "very worried and upset". "He is still in intensive care, he's still very ill and there are a lot of difficulties," the Sinn Féin Mid Ulster councillor said. "The family are very worried and very upset and they are just hoping he will pull through."
