DUP 'has nothing to fear from Irish language'

A

DUP assembly member has reportedly said she does not agree with Gregory Campbell's attitude towards the Irish language.

It was reported that during a 'youth hustings' event at Lagan College in Belfast on Monday, Paula Bradley publicly disagreed with her party colleague.

The DUP MLA for North Belfast, right, later tweeted that rows over Irish had "detracted from the important issues of that week including the Maíria Cahill debate".

Ms Bradley also tweeted: "We have nothing to fear from a language".

The DUP was unavailable for comment.

In November Mr Campbell sparked a row after he began an address to the assembly with "Curry my yoghurt can coca coalyer", in imitation of the Irish sentence "Go raibh maith agat, ceann comhairle", which translates as "Thank you, speaker".

He was barred from addressing the assembly for a day after he failed to apologise for mocking the language.

Just hours before Ms Bradley tweeted her comments Mr Campbell was barred from speaking in the assembly for the second time in five months after he yawned loudly while a Sinn Féin MLA spoke in Irish.

The East Derry MP was branded "juvenile" and "blatantly disrespectful" for twice yawning during a speech by Caitríona Ruane last week.
