'113 redundancies' claim

UP TO 113 full-time staff at Belfast Metropolitan College are expected to be made redundant, according to the trade union Unite.

Unite said its members have been told to expect between 83 and 113 full-time job losses due to budget cuts.

The union fears that some part-time staff could also be made redundant.

Unite spokesman Liam Gallagher said: "There are very real fears that this scale of job losses will undermine the quality of educational provision at the college." He said the cuts were "the latest in a series of brutal blows to our education sector".

The college has 34,000 students - almost a quarter of all college enrolments in the north.
