Loyalists mark 600 days at Twaddell

LOYALISTS paraded in north Belfast yesterday evening to mark the 600th day of nightly protests at the Twaddell interface.

Several loyalist bands and Orangemen, backed by a large group of supporters, paraded close to the interface. Some held banners saying "let them home".

Protests have been held every day since members of the Orange Order were banned

by the Parades Commission from walking past nationalist homes in nearby Ardoyne as they made their way home from the annual Twelfth of July demonstration in south Belfast in 2013.

A protest camp was set up on Housing Executive land close to the interface with Ardoyne in August 2013.

The cost of policing the illegal Twaddell Avenue camp and associated protest parades has topped £15 million. More than £10m of the overall figure is attributed to police overtime.
