Escaped armed robber caught at Belfast pub moved to jail in England

A PRISONER arrested outside a Belfast pub after he stabbed two prison officers during his escape from custody in the Republic was transferred to jail in England yesterday.

Convicted armed robber Derek Brockwell (53), who is originally from Glasgow, had been treated at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital since he was arrested at The Bridge House Wetherspoon pub on Bedford Street on February 18.

The PSNI said he was released from hospital yesterday and was transferred to Frankland prison in Durham.

Brockwell, who was being held at Portlaoise jail in Co Laois, was arrested in Belfast a day after he stabbed two officers in Tallaght Hospital in Dublin and fled custody.

As the PSNI arrested Brockwell, he stabbed himself in the stomach. Police also Tasered the prisoner in the struggle.

He is thought to have robbed a nearby pharmacy before his arrest.

Three people were arrested on Tuesday in connection with Brockwell's escape.

A man and a woman in their early sixties were arrested in Ashbourne, Co Meath.

A man in his thirties was detained in Portlaoise jail.
