GAA gym dedicated to memory of player

CO DERRY GAA club is to build a new gym in memory of a player who died suddenly while training.

Steven Deeney (32) took ill at Limavady leisure centre while training with Magilligan GAC in January.

Club chairman Peter Mullan said the players and management are determined to ensure the father-ofone's legacy continues for future generations.

"We decided the best way to honour Steven was to dedicate a new gym to his memory," Mr Mullan said.

"That way it can be used by the parish and by present and future Magilligan players."

Mr Mullan said the tragedy is still felt within the club.

"You can see it in the players; it's still raw. But it has gelled the players; they've all rededicated themselves to the club and are determined to see this through," he said.

The club has discussed its plans with Mr Deeney's parents, Martin and Clare, and his four sisters and received their blessing.

"We won't be calling the gym the Steven Deeney Gym or anything like that but we'll be dedicating it to Steven and there will be a plaque to his memory," Mr Mullan said.

"That way future generations who never knew Steven will remember him."

He said the club's senior players are determined to press ahead as soon as possible, with all money raised in the annual Magilligan GAA golf classic next month going towards the gym.

"It'll be on Saturday April 18 in Greencastle (Co Donegal) and we are inviting all the GAA clubs who supported us at the time of Steven's tragic death to join us at the fundraiser."
