Gerry Kelly challenged over letters

SINN Fein's Gerry Kelly should "explain himself" after claiming not to know specifically who on the run (OTR) letters referred to, an Ulster Unionist MLA has said.

It emerged last month that Mr Kelly delivered a 'letter of comfort' to a leading suspect in the murder of Gareth O'Connor, having previously met with the family to deny IRA involvement in his disappearance in 2003.

The revelation led to the abandonment of an inquest in Mr O'Connor's murder.

The north Belfast MLA insisted he did not know "who the letter is to, or what it's about".

However, UUP justice spokesman Tom Elliott said he had evidence Mr Kelly did know.

"My colleague Lord Empey has it in black and white from the government that the OTR letters 'were clearly marked for an individual by name and sent to Sinn Féin'," he said.

"Given that Mr Kelly said in relation to the letters, 'there is no name for a recipient so I don't know who the letter is to', he now has some explaining to do.

"These are serious issues and Mr Kelly has very serious questions to answer. His public comments contradict what the facts are as stated by the government."

In response to a question by Lord Empey, Baroness Randerson said the ORT letters "were clearly marked for an individual by name and sent to Sinn Féin, accompanied by a covering letter".

"As the names were provided by Sinn Féin and the NIO were not aware of addresses for these individuals, Sinn Féin were expected to pass on the individual letter to the named recipient," she said.
