SYRIAN president Bashar Assad has said he is against the killing of civilians anywhere, but last week's Paris attacks were a result of western support for terrorism. More than 200,000 people have been killed since an uprising against the Assad family's four-decade rule began in March 2011.

In an interview with Czech publication Literarni Noviny, he urged western leaders to reconsider their backing of Syrian rebels and opposition. Meanwhile, A Turkish court has ordered the country's telecommunications authority to ban access to web pages showing Charlie Hebdo's recent front cover.
