Animal charity volunteers' dog car vandalised

ANIMAL sanctuary volunteers have told how their dog car was vandalised by a gang of youths during a charity collection in central Belfast.

Supporters of Assisi Animal Sanctuary drove a fur-covered Skoda, similar to the dog van used in hit 1994 comedy Dumb and Dumber, into Cornmarket for the fundraiser.

But they were left dismayed when a group of teenage boys broke a motorised wagging tail at the back of the vehicle.

The youths distracted volunteers before causing the damage.

Patrolling police officers remained in the area after the incident on Saturday afternoon.

Sanctuary manager Heather Weatherup, who took part in the fundraiser, said the vandalism left "quite a sour end to the day".

"For people to come and probably think it's funny to do damage to it was quite upsetting," she said.

The car was created by sanctuary volunteer Scott Milliken, from Islandmagee in Co Antrim, who helped with the collection alongside his eight-year-old daughter.

Shoppers donating to the charity were encouraged to have their picture taken with the motorised pooch - complete with eyes, a nose and furry ears.

Ms Weatherup said the damage was disappointing after Mr Milliken "put time and effort into making this car and trying to raise money". However, she said the Newtownards-based charity raised £2,300 on the day and thanked those who supported the fundraiser.
