PSNI officer 'in running' for top Garda role

A SENIOR PSNI officer has been short-listed for the role of Garda commissioner, according to reports. Scottish-born PSNI assistant chief con-stable Alistair Finlay is among the candidates being considered for the key role, according to The Irish Times.

Mr Finlay was responsible for managing the policing operation during the G8 summit in Co Fermanagh in July 2013.

He became acting deputy chief constable when Judith Gillespie retired earlier this year.

However, he did not apply for the full-time position and reverted to assistant chief constable after Drew Harris was appointed to the deputy role.

Mr Finlay began his career in 1982 as an officer with Strathclyde Police.

He joined the PSNI in 2006.
