Memorial attacked for the 19th time

MEMORIAL to three British soldiers shot dead by the IRA in 1971 has been attacked for the 19th time.

Republican slogans were sprayed over the stone memorial at White Brae in north Belfast and two wreaths were removed.

It was put up in 2009 to remember three Scottish soldiers - teenage brothers John and Joseph McCaig, and their 23-year-old colleague Dougald McCaughey.

James Wright, chairman of Oldpark/Cavehill branch of the Royal British Legion, said those responsible were "cowards".

Sinn Féin councillor Gerry McCabe said attacks on the memorial "must stop".

"Memorials from whatever background should not be targeted in this way," he said.
