Pupils pay generous tribute to Oscar

SCHOOLCHILDREN were praised for their generosity yesterday after hosting a fundraiser in memory of brave cancer victim Oscar Knox. Staff and pupils at Blythefield Primary School in the Sandy Row area of south Belfast honoured the fight put up by the six-year-old, who died earlier this year.

Oscar's mum Leona attended the special assembly, where she was presented with a cheque following the school's fundraising efforts for the Neuroblastoma Children's Cancer Alliance UK, which helps families affected by the childhood cancer.

Oscar died in May following a battle with neuroblastoma, during which time his family launched the Oscar Knox Appeal campaign to raise awareness of the condition.

Mrs Knox yesterday said it was a "beautiful assembly" where she accepted a cheque for £305.45 "in Oscar's memory".

School principal Catherine Roulston said the school was delighted to hold a "very special assembly" in honour of little Oscar.

"Two of our pupils -- Laura Blackledge and Toni Nellins - asked if we

could raise money to help this charity in memory of Oscar so we said yes," she said.

"We held a Summer Fun Day in June with bouncy castles, bbq, face painting, games and much more. The community came out in force to support this fundraising event. We raised £305.45.

"Oscar's mum has been really humbled by the kindness and generosity of the children of Blythefield."
