Funeral of Clonard's Fr Ward to take place today

A REDEMPTORIST priest and preacher at Clonard Monasterio is to be laid to rest today.

Fr Peter Ward died on Saturday morning.

In a short statement, Clonard said: "It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our Redemptorist confrère and member of the Clonard Community Fr Peter Ward."

Fr Ward, pictured, was educated in Ireland, Brussels and Rome.

He worked for 21 years as a missionary in India and was a retreat preacher in Clonard. His first book, The God of Welcomes, published in 1996, describes his years as a redemptorist priest in India. During the 1990s, Fr Ward together with the late Fr Michael Clancy catalogued all of the books in the community library, a massive task that involved recording the titles and authors of more than 8,000 books. This task came about principally because of the advent of computers which allowed for a more systematic means of cataloguing, with Fr Ward to the forefront in using the new information technology.

Fr Ward's remains were removed to Clonard Church last night.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am today with burial afterwards in Milltown Cemetery.
