University study to look at history of Sailortown

RESEARCHERS are to undertake a new three-year study into the history of the docklands area of Belfast.

The study, being led by Dr Liz Thomas from the School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology at Queen's University, is seeking to shed light on living in

the 19th century dockland area of Sailortown, near the city centre.

From the 19th century, Sailortown residents were instrumental in the development of Belfast as one of the world's first industrial capitals.

From the late 1960s, however, many of the inhabitants relocated around Belfast because of redevelopment.

Now, researchers want to hear from anyone with a connection to Sailortown, asking them to come forward with their stories about the place and its people.

In addition, some volunteers will be able to take part in a proposed excavation, planned for next April, which will investigate the back yards of former houses in the area that date back to at least the 19th century.

Dr Thomas said the dock-land area was "significant because it represents the origin of Belfast as a world maritime and industrial capital".

"I have always been interested in every aspect of life related to the sea and docks, probably because my grandfather worked on the docks in Dublin and I really am interested in anyone who has any connection to Sailor-town to tell me their stories no matter how mundane it may seem," she added.

"I would love to hear stories about the women in Sailortown and I would be delighted for people with any connection to Sailortown to get in touch with me if they would like to be part of the study and excavation."
