Stokes to face trial over alleged assault

CELTIC and Republic of Ireland soccer star Anthony Stokes is to stand trial next year over an alleged assault on an Elvis impersonator at a Dublin nightclub.

Stokes, originally from Dublin, is accused of injuring performer Anthony Bradley (42) at Buck Whaley's nightclub on Leeson Street in June 2013.

At an earlier court appearance, it was alleged that Stokes headbutted the Elvis impersonator during a row over a spilled drink.

The 26-year-old soccer player, of Claremont Terrace, Glasgow, appeared in court in Dublin yesterday.

He was remanded on continuing bail and excused from a further court appearance this week due to work commitments.

He is currently with Martin O'Neill's Republic of Ireland squad who are preparing for Euro 2016 qualifying games against Gibraltar on Saturday and Germany next Tuesday.

His trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court is due to begin on May 11 and is expected to last three days.
