Relatives for Justice criticise Harris

A CAMPAIGN group which represents families of people killed by security forces has criticised newly-selected Deputy Chief Constable Drew Harris.

Relatives for Justice director Mark Thompson claimed the experience of victims in dealing with departments run by Mr Harris, currently in charge of PSNI Crime Operations which includes the C3 intelligence unit - formerly known as 'Special Branch' - has not been positive.

"It is also important to note that the new chief constable has approached these same issues in a more positive light if we are to measure his response to the recent legal challenge by the Police Ombudsman," he said.

Mr Harris was chosen by a Policing Board panel as the successor to Judith Gillespie this week, although Sinn Fein MLA Caitriona Ruane controversially withdrew from the process.

A spokesman for the PSNI last night said it had no comment to make on Mr Thompson's claims.
