Fatal-fire arrest woman released

A 57-YEAR-OLD woman who was arrested in connection with a fatal house fire in Carryduff, which claimed the life of a 91-year-old man, has been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and detained at a police station in north Down on Wednesday in relation to the blaze, which happened in the early hours of Tuesday. Samuel Carson lost his life in the fire, which started at an adjoining property at Thorndale Park.

The blaze then spread to his home on the Hillsborough Road.

The fire service said the blaze first took hold in a garage before spreading to two nearby oil tanks. The tanks ruptured, sending burning oil flowing down towards the back of Mr Carson's bungalow.

The pensioner, who lived alone, tried to flee but was overcome by fumes.
