Where does our power come from?

THE majority of Northern Ireland's energy needs is met through natural gas.

A total of 57 per cent of energy used comes from gas, which is supplied from the North Sea through a pipeline from Scotland.

Coal is the second-largest energy source at 33 per cent, followed by 10 per cent provided by wind energy supplied through the north's 31 wind farms.

There are three power stations located in Northern Ireland that help to meet energy needs.

Coolkeeragh near Derry and Ballylumford in Islandmagee, near Larne are gas-fired power stations, while Kilroot power station near Carrickfergus is coal, oil and biomass-fuelled.

Electricity is supplied to Northern Ireland through the Moyle interconnector with South Ayrshire in Scotland, carrying the energy from Britain.
