Honorary degree for McAleese

FORMER president Mary McAleese was awarded an honorary degree by Glasgow's Strathclyde University yesterday.

Mrs McAleese, who served as president between 1997 and 2011, received a Doctorate of the University.

The former barrister and law lecturer already has several honorary doctorates from the University of Otago in New Zealand and US universities Mount Holyoke College, Fordham University and UMass Lowell.

Last week Strathclyde University awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters to Belfast-born writer Bernard MacLaverty, author of five collections of short stories and novels including Lamb, Cal and Grace Notes.
