Kelly criticised for missing Westminster OTR hearing

SINN Fein's Gerry Kelly has been criticised for not attending a Westminster select committee hearing into the issue of on the runs.

The party said there was "no point" in Mr Kelly, right, attending Westminster because he had already met Lady Justice Hallett and her review team.

The review is examining how more than 200 people were told they were no longer wanted for paramilitary crimes before the Good Friday Agreement.

TUV leader Jim Allister criticised Mr Kelly.

"His refusal to attend is a challenge to the authority of the Westminster committee, which they must not dodge,: he said, Sinn Féin's deputy first minister Martin McGuinness said his party had clearly outlined its position on the issue.

"in the interests of transparency and in an attempt to minimise the damage to the peace process from a growing public controversy, Sinn Féin agreed to participate fully and willingly in the Hallett Review," he said. "To that end our party president Gerry Adams, Gerry Kelly and myself met with the Hallett review team earlier this week and put Sinn Féin's position on this and other legacy issues on the record.

"We see no point therefore in Gerry Kelly attending the Westminster [hearing]."
