Shock, upset and drama in former SDLP heartland

SINN Fein has emerged as the dominant party in the new Derry and Strabane council after one of the most dramatic elections in recent history.

Last week's local government vote marked a historic development in Derry, the heartland of the SDLP, when Sinn Fein out-polled the party for the first time ever in the city.

The SDLP lost three seats including the party's long serving Claudy councillor, Brenda Stevenson.

The elections to the new super-council were marked by a huge rise in support for independent candidates, in particular high-profile dissident republican, Gary Donnelly.

A well-known member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, Mr Donnelly topped the poll in Derry's Moor ward and was returned on the first count.

His success is the first major move into the political process by a leading dissident republican and was welcomed as that by deputy first minister, Martin McGuinness.

There was also success for former Strabane IRSP member, Paul Gallagher, who was returned for the Sperrin ward. In 2011, Mr Gallagher came to within 0.6 of a vote of winning a seat.

However, in Thursday's poll he was returned on the ninth count after winning 977 first preference votes.

The Strabane man said the rise of the independents was clear evidence that people were unhappy with the mainstream parties.

"I had a solid vote based on the work I do and that vote came out for me. It is clear that people want change; they are fed up with the larger parties setting policies in Belfast and then trying to impose them in places like Strabane.

"Look at the recent decision by Dard to move 800 jobs to Limavady which should have come to Strabane. Strabane was right for the jobs and should have got them. People look at that and say they want change and that's what happened," Mr Gallagher said.

With voting completed on Saturday afternoon, Sinn Fein hold 16 seats, six more than the SDLP while the DUP came third with eight seats followed by the Ulster Unionists on two and four for independent candidates.

Earlier on Saturday, police were called when a brother of former SDLP leader, John Hume became involved in an altercation with the SDLP's Stra-bane councillor, Patsy Kelly.

The two men clashed during the count at Templemore sports complex in a row believed to have arisen from disagreements over the party's canvassing arrangements in Strabane.

Jim Hume - whose son-in-law, Patrick Leonard was an unsuccessful SDLP candidate - left the count centre when requested to do so.
