Loyalist Harbinson faces return to jail after breaking sex order

PROMINENT loyalist Mark Harbin-son faces being jailed again after a jury yesterday convicted him of breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

The Craigavon Crown Court jury convicted the 46-year-old, from Sheepwalk Road in Lisburn, Co Antrim, of breaching the order between May 22 and June 18 last year by associating with the Pride of the Village Flute Band in Stoneyford.

The order, put in place after Harbinson was convicted of sexually molesting a 13-year-old girl he met through the band, barred him from associating

with the band or any other organisation.

The court heard that within three weeks of his release from prison, Harbinson telephoned and then wrote an e-mail to the Parades Commission in protest at restrictions they had imposed on a band parade, signing it "Mark Harbin-son, Pride of the Village spokesman".

Giving evidence on his own behalf, former Orangeman Harbinson denied he had associated with the band because he knew that if he did, he would be sent back to prison.

He claimed that a friend, who had asked for his help to write to the Parades Commission, had sent the e-mail without his knowledge.

As well as being convicted of sexually abusing the girl at the end of his trial in February 2011, Harbinson was also found guilty of having indecent photo-graphs of a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Explicit photographs were found on his mobile phone along with thousands of text messages he had exchanged with the teenager.

Releasing Harbin-son on continuing bail, Judge Patrick Kinney said Harbinson would be sentenced on June 24.
