Councillor denies posting 'questionable' information on iPad

AN SDLP councillor in Derry has denied involvement in the alleged posting of "questionable" information on an iPad owned by the city council.

SDLP councillor Jimmy Carr, pictured, issued his denial through the party after Derry City Council was informed about the incident.

It is understood the matter centres on an iPad issued to councillors to assist with their work as elected representatives.

Police have confirmed that they are aware of allegations and are in possession of an iPad which they are examining to establish if any criminal offence had been committed.

An SDLP spokeswoman said the issue came to light last week when an SDLP councillor alerted a senior council officer.

She said: "The device was handed in with the recommendation that it be referred to the police. The party has also notified the police and will cooperate with any investigation."

The spokeswoman confirmed that there was a "suggestion" that the messages appeared to be linked to Mr Carr who is also standing in tomorrow's election to the new Derry-Strabane council.

But she said the councillor was denying involvement.

"Jimmy Carr has denied any involvement to the party and has told the party that he is willing to cooperate with both the PSNI and Derry City Council."

The council said that no complaint has been received and they had not started an investigation into any elected member.
