Man escapes injury as shotgun fired at house

A MAN in his thirties narrowly escaped injury yesterday after a shotgun was fired through the window of his home in Co Antrim.

The shooting occurred in the Elver Avenue area of Toome at around 12.25am.

Police received a report that damage had been caused to a window of a house.

It is understood the damage was caused by a shotgun blast.

The man, Gary Savage, who is in his thirties is originally from Belfast but has been living in Toome for several years.

It is understood his housing executive home has been attacked several times in the past and Mr Savage was reportedly considering moving after the latest incident.

Sinn Fein councillor Henry Cushinan, who visited the scene yesterday morning, said people were shocked and could think of no reason why the man was targeted.

"One of the neighbours heard the shot and rushed in immediately. The guy was sitting in the room and the back wall appeared to have been peppered," he said.

"If he'd been walking across to the TV at the time, the headlines would be a lot different this morning", Mr Cushinan said, adding:

"There is no support for this kind of behaviour in Toome and I would like whoever is behind it to try and justify their actions."

Anyone with information is being asked to contact CID in Antrim Police Station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
