F1 star Schumacher showing 'moments of consciousness'

MICHAEL Schumacher is showing "moments of consciousness and awakening" more than three months after suffering serious head injuries in a skiing accident, his manager has said.

Manager Sabine Kehm said in a statement that "Michael is making progress on his way", adding that "we keep remaining confident".

The retired Formula One star's family does not intend to disclose further details, Ms Kehm said.

Schumacher (45) fell while skiing in the French ski resort of Meribel and hit the right side of his head on a rock, cracking his helmet.

Doctors in Grenoble operated to remove blood clots from his brain but some were left because they were too deeply embedded.

Schumacher's condition stabilised after he was placed in the coma. In late January, doctors began the process of withdrawing sedatives to try to wake him up.
