Branagh portrait unveiled at theatre

POTRAIT of award-winning Belfast-born director and actor sir Kenneth Branagh was unveiled at the Lyric Theatre yesterday.

The 53-year-old, who starred in The Painkiller at the south Belfast theatre in 2011, sat for the portrait by Colin Davidson last year.

"I went to see him in Pinewood studios in London where he was directing Cinderella and working on the Jack Ryan film," the artist said.

The painter said he believes the painting is the first official portrait of sir Kenneth.

"it's a real pleasure to even get to meet someone of the calibre of sir Kenneth Branagh, let alone be entrusted with painting him," he said. Several of Davidson's other portraits, including those of actors Conleth Hill, Stella Mccusker and Adrian Dunbar, are on show at the Lyric.
