More bishops than on a chess board

The appointment of Donal McKeown as leader of Derry's Catholics brings the number of bishops living in the diocese to six.

Dr McKeown will join his predecessors Seamus Hegarty and Edward Daly, as well as retired auxiliary bishop Francis Lagan. Derry is also home to two Church of Ireland bishops - Bishop of Derry and Raphoe Ken Good and Dr James Mehaffey, whom he succeeded.

In addition, the new Coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh, eamon Martin, is a native of Derry.

While the city can boast an unrivalled bench or Psalter of bishops (the collective nouns), it was not always the case.

For a period of 119 years, from 1601 until 1720, the Church went without a bishop in Derry following the murder of Bishop Redmond O'Gallagher. He was eventually replaced by Terence Donnelly.

And although Derry boasts more bishops than a chess set, only Eamonn Martin is native to the city itself, the diocesan capital.
