FORMER US president Bill Clinton will pay tribute to Nobel Laureate John Hume on a visit to Northern Ireland next week.

Mr Clinton will address a public meeting in Derry's Guildhall Square next Wednesday as a guest of the University of Ulster.

It was in Guildhall Square where the then president Clinton was greeted by Mr Hume as he delivered his first speech in Ireland in 1995.

The former president will use his address at Guildhall Square to honour former SDLP leader's contribution to peace in Northern Ireland.

His visit also coincides with the launch of a new book Peacemaking in the 21st Century.

The publication is a collection of peace lectures delivered at the Magee campus of the University of Ulster.

University vice-chancellor, Richard Barnett said President Clinton had a long history of engagement with the institution. "We are honoured that President

Clinton will be with us both to launch the book and to support the developments at INCORE, the university's international peace and conflict centre, linked to the John Hume and Thomas P O'Neill chair in peace," Professor Barnett said.

SDLP assembly member Pat Ramsey said the visit was a "worldwide mark of respect" for Mr Hume. "He will no doubt see a city transformed and the legacy of John Hume's never ending commitment for peace," Mr Ramsey said.
