Warrant issued for Tyrone actor

A BENCH warrant has been issued for the arrest of Co Tyrone actor Gerard McSorley after he failed to appear in court accused of breaching the peace at a Dublin hotel. The 63-year-old, who played crime boss John Gilligan in the film Veronica Guerin and won a Best Actor IFTA for his part in Omagh, was due to appear in Dublin District Court.

He had been arrested and charged with engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour at a hotel in St Stephen's Green in Dublin earlier this month. The actor had allegedly been socialising with friends in Staunton's Hotel when a row broke out.

He was due to appear in court on Thursday but when he did not appear a judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

Mr McSorley is originally from Omagh, but has an address in Bunbeg, Co Donegal.

He has carved out a career on stage and screen, appearing in films such as War Horse and Angela's Ashes and as Fr Todd Unctuous in a Christmas special of Father Ted.
